This edition aims to provide assistance for those who are responsible for selecting software to handle text records by giving details of the software packages available. Whether this information is bibliographic, technical, legal or medical, the user needs to be aware of the main features of each software which is to be considered and compared if a suitable package is to be identified. The first section defines text retrieval, analyzes the key features of the packages profiled and outlines steps in choosing a text retrieval package. The second section consists of the directory itself, listing the characteristics of packages. It provides details of the software available for creating text databases in the UK, Europe and the USA. Each entry is structured in the same way to ease comparison and comprehension. Each profile includes such information as hardware requirements, facilities for creating files, indexing and searching facilities, hardcopy and machine-readable output possibilities, maintenance, support and user group details, price range and suppliers and agents. This latest edition contains supplier profiles where available and a revised index system.
