内容説明

This book demonstrates how the physical chemistry of elementary processes in natural and artificial membranes are one and the same - even though the biological systems are extremely complex - and shows that the inter-relationship between the science dealing with transport processes "in vivo" and in synthetic membranes can hold the key to our understanding of the principles governing the functioning of living systems. By taking an in-depth look at the physical chemistry of transport processes in membrane systems, the author pinpoints the posssibilities for membrane separation of liquid and gaseous mixtures and membrane preparation of substances. He emphasizes the importance of the changes to the intense mass and electromass transfer regimes when quasiequilibrium concepts, based on linear thermodynamics of nonequilibrium processes, become inadequate; and shows how, under these conditions, the modification of the membrane surface proves effective and the control over tranport processes becomes viable due to the formation of a submicroheterogeneous structure of the membrane material. As a result, membrane transport acquires features typical of molecular and ionic transport in the most effective biological membrances with respect to the route (along submicrochannels) and general kinetic trends. What are the prosects for future interaction between physiocochemical biology and membrance technology? What can we learn from nature? How can the study and understanding of the kinetics of processes in biological membranes help us solve the problems of synthesis and modification of new membrane materials and develop new effective membrane processes? This book responds to these and other questions as well as introducing new ideas which may change the face of membrane technology in the future. It should be welcomed by all those studying and researching in the physics, chemistry and biochemistry of solution, transport and separation processes.
