Description
In AD632, after the death of the Prophet, the first problem faced by the Islamic world was that of succession. From then on Islam has been driven by dissent, mainly as a result of a face-off between Islamic rulers who were secular and flexible in their interpretation, and fundamentalist theologians and their followers who insisted on a rigid adherence to the Quaran. This book focuses on the fight between the holders of power and the theologians of all shades of opinion in the Islamic world. The author examines the events that have led to discord - the treatment of non-Muslims, the nature of punishment and the concept of Muslim brotherhood. The author is a distinguished Indian politician and Deputy Leader of Congress under Indira Gandhi.
