内容説明
Covering the period from the turn of the century to the present, the essays composing this volume are the work of scholars in art history, film studies, literature, history and sociology. Topics covered range from early 20th-century cabaret to the dual celebration of the city's 750th anniversary, and highlight the contributions of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, George Grosz, Alfred Doblin, Siegfried Kracauer and Christa Wolf. The theme "Culture and Metropolis" is not intended simply as a celebration of Berlin as a cultural capital, the German equivalent of Paris, London or New York. These essays focus on the often uneasy relationship between the city and its culture - in literature, poetry, film, cabaret and the visual arts - as is the result of the major upheavals Berlin has experienced during this century.
