Description
Migration, undertaken for many reasons, was as much a fundamental aspect of human societies in the past, as it is today. Besides being an interesting phenomenon in its own right, however, the study of population movements is now seen as essential to understanding both the creation of, and the effects which stem from, structural change within society. The movement of populations in the 19th century, for example, was an important aspect of the process of industrialization, and has been used to illuminate many aspects of the rise of the Industrial Revolution, including the comparative progress of economic change in different regions. This study, drawing on the findings of historians, geographers and sociologists, sets out to highlight areas of concern and illustrate some of the new directions of research.
