This book traces the development of financial relations between between Japan and the United Kingdom from the arrival of the first trading house in Yokohama 1859. It tells the story of the decisive role of London in raising capital for Japan's early infrastructural development, and in providing finance for Japan's war against Russia. It also examines the re-emergence of London as a major financial centre in 1946, and the emergence of Japan as a leading financial and industrial power at the same time. The author served as British Ambassador to Japan in the 1970s.
