内容説明
This work traces the economic, political and ideological developments that have characterized US relations with Eastern Europe since World War II and provides an objective examination of the complex evolution of events that led to the end of the Cold War and the emergence from political exile of the "captive nations" of Eastern Europe which began in 1989. The author emphasizes the US policy of bringing about the popular rejection of communism while underlining the irony of the way in which US post-war policy also accommodated the entrenchment of Soviet power and encouraged superpower rivalry. The book ranges from the time of John Foster Dulles's containment strategy, through the normalization of the Nixon/Kissinger years to the human rights approach of Carter and the "evil empire" rhetoric of Reagan and concludes that the need for US involvement in Eastern Europe is as great as ever in terms of the need to encourage demilitarization and a practical integration that will favour Western interests.

内容説明
In this ambitious work, Bennett Kovrig lucidly traces the economic, political and ideological developments that have characterized U.S. relations with Eastern Europe since World War II. Kovrig provides a refreshingly objective examination of the complex evolution of events that led to the end of the cold war. His account of the days prior ro America's global confrontation with the U.S.S.R. when U.S. interests in Eastern Europe were minimal, of the economic and psychological warfare of the cold war, and of the growing diversity of Eastern European nations that contributed to the upheavals of 1989 offers a rich and comprehensive background to the current scenario.
