内容説明

Approximately 572 participants from 39 countries attended this congress, with a dramatic increase in participants from developing countries. With the exception of Japan, the developing world forms the natural environment of primates, and captive primates still form an ecological and financial problem not only because of their being outwith their natural environment, but also in their social behaviour. Nevertheless this book testifies to the increasing interest and discoveries in the field of primatology. Around 1960, a worldwide surge of activity in the field took place, and because the biological paradigm was shifting, much new information from primate studies was acquired. Added to this, research into the micro-dimensions of the chromosome and the gene opened doors to understanding the secrets and origins of life, an area previously restricted to the domains of religion and philosophy. On the other side, a growing awareness of the importance of knowing more about the total organism and its way of life, stimulated such fields as evolution, ecology biosociology and ethology.
