This volume deals primarily with the chemistry of aliphatic acids bearing hydroxy, amino, and carbonyl groups (including a second carboxylic function). The authors were all asked to emphasise those areas which most closely reflect current trends in their respective subjects in addition to bringing the coverage up-to-date. One subject in particular, that of amino acid chemistry, has undergone a spectacular increase in activity in the last two decades, a fact associated with new methodology which allows the synthesis of biologically important polypeptides and advances in drug design which target smaller peptides and their mimics as control agents in many diseases. It was felt that this topic required an expansion to match the current interest. Therefore, Chapter 15 was divided into two subchapters so that protection methods for amino acids and coupling(' methods could be dealt with more fully. The chemistry of the nitrogen derivatives of the alkanes: nitroalkanes, nitronic acids, and related compounds is covered in Chapter 6. This chapter should have appeared 'n Volume IA/B, but was not completed on time.
The inclusion of this chapter completes that part of the Second Supplement which deals only with the acyclic aliphatic compounds.

In this first volume of the second supplements, progress between 1972 and 1990 in monofunctional aliphatic chemistry, excluding nitrogen compounds, is systematically reviewed and thoroughly referenced. The space devoted to individual topics follows current research and reflects activity in the area. Thus there is more emphasis on reagent chemistry and the control of stereochemistry in synthesis than in the first supplement. However, the reader will still find that less topical areas of chemistry are still painstakingly documented. In short, nothing of importance, or potential importance is omitted.
