内容説明

For over 20 years the authors engaged in a quest to track down follies and record the fund of anecdotes attaching to them. They also explored the eccentric ideas which for centuries past led British landowners to exercise their inventive talents in such a form, and rejoice in the post-modernist renaissance of folly architecture and the return of such architects as Peter Foster and Quinlan Terry to the folly idiom. In the age of the "monstrous carbuncle" this guide to over a thousand follies offers a celebration of creative architecture - from an underwater ballroom in Surrey to concrete cows in Milton Keynes. The book is divided into regions and counties. Dates of origin are given and architects and patrons named wherever known. A gazetteer provides reference for locating the buildings, whether they stand in imposing, grim or comic prominence, or are to be found only after running the gauntlet of dogs, bulls or irate men with guns. This is a guide to rogue architecture in Britain today.
