Description

The idea of Hume as a philosopher of culture has only recently gained general acceptance, yet as far back as 1941 the Journal of the History of Ideaswas publishing essays on Hume which reflected this aspect of his work. The essays selected for this volume range back over a period of some years, but, given the recent revival of interest in Hume, they may be viewed as more timely than ever. The image of Hume as philosopher of culture which emerges from these essays is little known to most professional philosophers, yet the foundations for this aspect of his thought were laid in Hume's first book: A Treatise of Human Nature(1739). All the rest of his writings may be viewed as an application of the master science of human nature framed in that book. This collection will inspire philosophers to take a fresh look at Hume and to explore the rich philosophy of culture he drew out of the Treatise. The contributors are: DONALD LIVINGSTON, CHRISTOPHER J. BERRY, CHARLES E. COTTLE, ROBERT McRAE, ROBERT LYON, E.J. HUNDERT, STEVEN WALLECH, DONALD T. SIEBERT, S.K. WERTZ, JAMES E. FORCE, ERNEST CAMPBELL MOSSNER, MARJORIE GRENE, COREY VENNING and JOHN. M. WERNER.
