Dorothy Watts challenges the general view of Christianity as a minor Eastern religion in Roman Britain, and provides an assessment of the extent of Christianity and its place in the Romano-British religious tradition. She reappraises the evidence for Christianity in Roman Britain, and defines and evaluates pagan links and influences. Showing that the evidence for Christianity itself is often far from clear, she re-examines the published works and looks in detail at archaeological projects completed but not yet published, and at others still in progress. From these she develops new criteria for the identification of Christian cemeteries and churches, and for the recognition of Christian artefacts, inscriptions and symbols.
