Description
Albert Bickmore was an American naturalist who arrived in Batavia (now Jakarta) in mid-1865 to catch a boat to the Spice Islands (the Moluccas) for the purpose of shell-collecting. Once his objectives of shell-collecting were achieved, he turned his attention to other aspects of natural history and proceeded to travel to several parts of the Malay archipelago. His book, based on a journal kept day by day with scrupulous care, covers Java, Bali, and Lombok, Sulawesi, the Moluccas, East Timur and much of Sumatra. It appears that Bickmore was not a traveller who travelled only for the sake of research, but rather one who also enjoyed travel simply for adventure and for the fresh experiences it provided. Reflecting his inquiring mind, the book brims over with information about everything he encountered on his year-long journey.
