内容説明

In this examination of the possible threat posed by the marriage of an age-old weapon, poison gas, with a nuclear-age delivery system, the ballistic missile, the authors assess the alleged proliferation of chemical weapons and missile technology worldwide, with particular emphasis on the Asia/Pacific region. They also describe the ongoing efforts to curb chemical and missile proliferation and to find lasting solutions to the problem. Detailed attention is given to the new chemical weapons convention, designed to permanently ban chemical weapons globally, and to the missile technology control regime. Key documents issued at the time of the regime's unveiling in 1987 are included in their entirety. The book offers both essential background to and vigorous analysis of one of the most challenging weapons control issues of today. It should be of interest to international relations and defense specialities and those concerned with the future of the Asia/Pacific region. Trevor Findlay is senior research fellow at the Australian National University's Peace Research Centre and editor of the Centre's periodical, ""Pacific Research"". Formerly an Australian foreign service officer, he was a member of the Australian delegation to the Conference on disarmament in Geneva. His research interests focus on arms control and disarmament, particularly nuclear testing, chemical weapons, confidence-building measures, and nonproliferation. He is author of ""Nuclear Dynamite: The Peaceful Nuclear Explosions Fiasco"" and editor of ""Verifying a Test Ban"".
