内容説明
This book describes the major theories which account for the observed properties of the elements and their compounds. One of the main problems in teaching inorganic chemistry is the absence of a good general text which covers broad areas (ranging from chemical bonding to the kinetic and thermodynamic aspects of the function of metals in biological chemistry). While the level of treatment is by no means as "deep" as it could be in this book it is sufficient for the student to realize that he or she is likely to encounter problems in understanding the elements and their properties, and that there are ways and means of gaining a deeper understanding where necessary. Jack Barrett provides concise descriptions of currently held theory without being overly mathematical. Each chapter concludes with a summary of the subject matter and a comprehensive list of books useful for further reading is also provided at the end of the book. The author makes a conscious effort not to follow the general tendency frequently found in other inorganic chemistry textbooks - that is concentrating on the descriptive aspects and omitting the theoretical basis.
In this way he encourages a fuller understanding of the subject. Only the chemical theory which should be possessed by any student hoping to graduate as a chemist or as a life scientist is included, and it is not necessary for the student to have A level mathematics to fully understand and appreciate this book.
