内容説明

The Marquis de Condorcet (1743-94), Perpetual Secretary of the Academie des Sciences, member of the Legislative Assembly and the Convention, mathematician, political theorist, economic reformer, defender of the public good, was the last of the philosophes of the ancien regime, and the only one to witness the French Revolution and to play an active part in it. His legacy to posterity in the fields of mathematics and probability theory, positivism, and above all his key contributions to the evolution of the social sciences, has still not been fully explored and evaluated. The present volume contains nine essays by noted scholars in the realm of Enlightenment studies on subjects such as feminism, education, religion, politics, philosophy and other aspects of Condorcet's thought that highlight the richness and complexity of his writings.
