内容説明

This text discusses the growth in the application and sophistication of chemical pesticides or agrochemicals which has been particularly rapid since the end of World War II. The physiochemical factors and biochemical reactions important in pesticides are discussed as an introduction to the subsequent chapters dealing with the major chemical groups used to control different kinds of pests. The various methods of formulation and application of pesticides are also covered; there is now much research directed towards discovering new, improved formulations. The greater awareness of the dangers of environmental pollution arising from the widespread use of chemical pesticides is reflected in the growing emphasis placed on safer and more selective chemicals. In most countries, candidate chemicals have to satisfy increasingly stringent legislative criteria before they can be marketed as pesticides; the effects of pesticides on the environment are discussed together with future developments. Areas currently of special interest include new specific systemic fungicides, selective herbicides against grass weeds, chemicals controlling the growth of insects and plants, insect antifeedants and microbial insecticides. The discovery of new biochemical target sites for pesticides is a major objective, which has been given added impetus by the introduction of sulfonylurea herbicides and triazole fungicides. The spectacular exploitation of the insecticidal properties of natural pyrethrum has led to renewed interest in natural products as a route to novel insecticides. Important developments have occurred in the use of pheromones in insect monitoring and control. Application of integrated pest management programmes is becoming of increasing significance in order to reduce the dangers of pest resistance and environmental pollution. Biotechnology is already making an appreciable impact on crop protection and will be the major weapon of control in the 21st century. This book aims to be of value to all interested in chemical pesticides, and especially to undergraduates in universities, polytechnics, and colleges studying for degrees in agriculture, agricultural chemistry, applied biology, and applied chemistry.
