The guidelines constitutes the Library Association's principal policy statement on the nature and quality of library provision in colleges and polytechnics. The document discusses the contribution libraries make to learning, the services they should be able to provide, and their place in the institution's structure. The role of library staff is discussed. Details of actual and recommended resource provision are provided for each of stock, staff, and revenue funding. A wide range of basic design data is provided, as are proposals for evaluating library services. This edition is more concise than its predecessor "College Libraries" and its resource recommendations are based on extensive research into conditions in the field.
