内容説明
This is a study of Victorian middle class culture as observed through the domestic, commercial, social and political careers of four 19th century British businessmen. The author examines separately the biographies of each family over three generations, then offers, on the basis of comparisons and contrasts revealed in these histories, observations on 19th century society. These range from the fate of the family firm to the supposed self-subordination of commercial wealth to the establishment. Of special interest are changes over time in the family and community networks which supported early Victorian enterprise, and corresponding generational shifts in economic, social and political ambition and connection.
