Description
An introductory picture is given of the present scope of plant breeding in research and application. Beginning with classical breeding procedures, demonstrated by simple schemes, the latest developments of this discipline are described. Haploids, protoplasts, RFLP markers and gene transfer are integral parts of breeding strategies, where the results are the central subject, as opposed to the method. The pure breeding sections are supplemented by basic information on safeguarding and utilizing genetic resources, farming systems, plant physiology and plant pathology. Upon completing the book, the reader should have an understanding of the whole complex of plant production, as well as strategies on how to approach breeding aims in a straightforward manner.
