Description and Table of Contents

Description

It has become increasingly evident that calcium plays an essential role in various aspects of physiological function and disease. This two-volume work, recording an international symposium, summarizes the current state of research on calcium-regulating hormones, body functions and the kidney, and clarifies problematic areas. In this first volume, investigators report findings in three main areas of interest. Papers in the first section address the problems of the relationship between calcium and hypertension, and include a discussion of PHF, the recently-discovered circulating hypertensive factor. The second section covers calcium and renal diseases with a focus on vitamin D metabolism and the treatment of calcium abnormalities. The final section considers the effects of calcium on diabetes mellitus and aging, drawing particular attention to the role of parathyroid hormone.
