Description

In addition to presenting the basic principles of waveguiding in optical fibres, both single mode and multimode, this book explains the characteristics of light sources and detectors, coupling phenomena, receiver performance and optical fibre link analysis. The authors aim to clarify the principles of polarization maintaining fibres; coupling phenomena and coupling losses, both in single mode and multimode connections; coherent optical fibre principles; and marked and filtered poisson processes (shot noises) and Gaussian beams. Assuming some basic knowledge of the principles of electromagnetic fields, optics, semiconductor physics, Fourier analysis and noise calculations, the text is designed for graduate level electrical engineers as well as practising scientists and engineers in research and developing laboratories.
