内容説明

This book is a collection of studies on the interpretation of opera based on structural analysis, many of which are now held to be classics. The author's analysis of operatic structure concentrates not on the elements of musical form but on aspects of the musico-dramatic process, representing a field of inquiry which had hitherto been largely neglected in musical research. Eight chapters deal with separate works ("Le nozze di Figaro", "Cosi fan tutte", "Simon Boccanegra", "Don Carlos" and "Otello"). In addition to this there are studies on the semantics of orchestration in Mozart and the structural functions of ritual scenes, the musical Figure of Death, and the cabaletta in Verdi. Appendices include a discussion of semiotic devices in opera, and the complete correspondence between Verdi and Boito, both in Italian and in English translation, on the revision of "Simon Boccanegra".
