Description

The relationship between epilepsy and psychiatry is well recognized but there has been remarkably little research on the interface between the neuropharmacology of epilepsy and the psychopharmacology of associated psychiatric conditions. The purpose of this book is therefore to explore the subject in depth in the light of recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy. As part of their treatment, epileptic patients with associated psychopathology often receive psychotropic drugs in addition to anticonvulsant medication, but there is scant information available to clinicians on how these two drug groups interact. This book therefore presents a review of some of the latest research in this area, and then develops its theme to include an examination of kindling as a possible model for the development of behaviour disturbances in epileptic patients. Also included are discussions of various aspects of treatment of depressive illness and the psychoses of epilepsy, and of the use of anti-convulsant drugs in non-epileptic psychiatric conditions.
