Since its conception in 1949, the NATO Alliance has been determined to secure, deny and exploit the seas, despite assuming that global war, if it came, would be largely land-based and fought over Europe. In this book Joel Sokolsky provides a major analysis of the prelude to the maritime strategy, showing how NATO's maritime forces, particularly those of the USN, were organized in the Cold War period. The author describes how the USN and Allied navies, particularly the Royal Navy, were incorporated into the Alliance's nuclear and, above all, conventional deterrent forces. He examines the structure of the main naval commands, the growth of Soviet maritime forces and the impact of the flexible response strategy of NATO in the 1970s.
