This book describes the impact of institutionalisation on part-Aboriginal people in the Northern Territory. It focuses on a section of Kahlin Compound to which Aboriginal people were brought from all over the Top End, as a result of the 'selected breeding program' initiated by the Commonwealth under the Aborigines Act of 1911. Kahlin Compound was later transferred to Bagot Reserve, a portion of which was set aside as the Retta Dixon Children's Home. The Home, run by the Aborigines Inland Mission, operated until 1980 and had severe consequences for the young people forced to live there. This book provides an account of the views of some of those who grew up under the dormitory system. It also includes detailed analysis of the social and political forces which resulted in the displacement of part-Aboriginal children in the Northern Territory. This is the first time that such an investigation, which combines the personal and the political, has been undertaken.
