It is now generally accepted that environmental problems have become one of the most pressing issues for the survival of the planet. The role of environmental issues in peace research, and the starting point of this volume, is that environmental problems not only have their origins in political and social rather than ecological factors, but that conflict arising from environmental problems is pertinent to the work of peace researchers. Using a wide range of case-study material, this team of researchers elucidate the close relationship between environmental factors and conflicts on a national and international scale, and the contribution which peace research can make to the study of global ecology and the resolution of environmental conflict.
