The premise on which this book is based is that the 10,000 years of experience and knowledge embodied in traditional agriculture and local cultures can be combined with modern agricultural science to develop more sustainable, environmentally sound and useful agricultural practices. In a survey of indigenous systems worldwide, the author evaluates the labour requirements, external inputs, effectiveness and practicality of the techniques developed by farmers, and suggests ways in which these traditional methods could contribute to today's environmental ethic and agriculture.
