Description
This handbook provides the first detailed and critical list of the early sheriffs of all the English counties before 1154, and should be of interest to those working on the history of England between the 10th and 12th centuries. In addition to identifying and dating sheriffs it provides substantial incidental information on the development of local government in that period. In the introduction the author outlines the difficulties involved in compiling the lists from sources which are largely undated, and discusses the early history of the office and its holders.
