This volume brings together the work investigators worldwide. It contains over 50 accounts of recent and ongoing research in cartilage biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology, physiology and pathophysiology, and pertinent biomechanics. Presented as well are research findings on potential diagnostic markers of early osteoarthritis and investigational therapeutic interventions. Special attention is given to the early detection of osteoarthritis by imaging, arthroscopy, or molecular markers in serum or joint fluid, as well as to the epidemiology and clinical course of the disease and the prophylactic and therapeutic use of drugs.
