内容説明

National and international assessments have suggested that American students lack both sophisticated knowledge and the ability to think critically about many school subjects. As such findings proliferate, many education critics have begun to ask what American teachers know about the subjects they teach, and many have argued that teachers need more and better subject-matter preparation for teaching. At the same time, others point out that our student body is becoming increasingly diverse, and that teachers need sophisticated and detailed knowledge about the diverse students they encounter. Surely teachers need knowledge of both subject matter and students. But how much knowledge, and what kind they need, is less clear. This book examines the complicated issues of both subject matter and students, presenting several ideas about the kind of knowledge that will most benefit teachers. This book should prove invaluable to teacher educators and all who are concerned with educational policy as it relates to standards for teacher education. It can also serve as a supplementary text in a variety of graduate teacher education courses and as a professional resource for pre- and in-service teachers.
