The importance of reading is recognized in education and recreation. Libraries in schools and the public sector, as well as colleges dealing with teacher education devote time to the careful selection of a sound, comprehensive stock of children's fiction. This source book should act as a basic working tool for all those concerned with children's reading. Authors have been selected on the grounds of importance, popularity and current availability. Author entries are arranged in alphabetical order thoughout the book, and indexes provided by title, series, age-range and genre. Each entry consists of some background information, a stylistic and evaluative comment, literary agent where applicable, a list of that author's books with publisher, date and price, a suggestion of similar authors, sequels, related series and reader age range. The few existing sources to children's fiction are mainly academic, historical or selective in some way, and reviews are widely scattered. This book fulfils the need for a good quality, professional and analytical one-stop source for teachers, librarians, parents and children. It is intended to be updated at regular intervals.
