内容説明

This is part of a series of interpretative books which analyze the major features of the careers of key political figures in world history since 1500. Nasser is an outstanding figure of the postwar Middle East. Premier of Egypt from 1954 to his death in 1970, he had extraordinary achievements to his name. Nasser transformed the political and economic situation, and set the country on a path to industrialization and socialism which, though modified, has made Egypt the largest industrial power in the Middle East. This book surveys his life and in doing so provides an introduction to the whole history of the postwar Middle East. While many of Nassers ventures in international affairs were ultimately unsuccessful or unfulfilled, Woodward shows how full and enduring was his political and economic legacy to Egypt itself.

目次

  • Egypt before Nasser
  • the making of a nationalist
  • the rise of Nasserism
  • Nasserism comes of age
  • confrontation with Israel
  • Egypt after Nasser.

内容説明

Even today Nasser remains the outstanding figure of the postwar Middle East, partly because of his remarkable political achievements, but also because his career seems to embody so many of the abiding preoccupations of the region and the time -- nationalism, independence, economic modernisation, the love-hate relationship with Western economic power and Soviet ideology, pan-Arab unity, and conflict with Israel. In exploring these themes to illuminate Nasser the man, Peter Woodward provides an ideal introduction to the postwar history of the most volatile region of the modern world.
