Description
The biology and management of high risk groups for colorectal cancer is the overall thrust of this book. This includes an in-depth discussion of individuals with adenomatous polyps, dietary risk factors, familial adenomatous polyposis, inflammatory bowel disease, and hereditary non polyposis colorectal cancer. The relationship of "sporadic" colorectal cancer (CRC) to known inherited syndromes is explored in-depth. A major focus of the book is the exciting new developments in CRC. This is exceedingly complex, commensurate with its extant heterogeneity. This book surveys virtually all varieties of sporadic, familial and hereditary forms of CRC. In each of these disorders, the pathology, natural history, genetics, and molecular genetics (when known) are discussed. Surveillance and management programs, including chemopreventive strategies when applicable, are emphasized. Discussions about hereditary CRC registries, including their logistics and the precautions required for insuring confidentiality are described.
This book provides useful clinical and research guidelines for primary care physicians, general and colorectal surgeons, gastroenterologists, pathologists, epidemiologists and cancer geneticists.
