Description
This text analyzes the features of continuity and change in the communal riots between Hindus and Muslims which took place in Bengal during the first four decades of the 20th century. Some of the major issues examined in this study are how the riots lost their initial spontaneity and became overtly communal and organized; the anatomy of the crowd; and how the riots promoted communal consciousness at various levels of society and polity.
