During the past 40 years, there have been major changes in the commercial production of vegetables. Many scientific and technical developments have occurred in this time and production has moved from small-scale market gardens to large, farm-scale enterprises. This book sets out the principles of commercial vegetable production. Consideration is given to: locational and climatic factors; the influence of soil; nutritional requirements; aspects of plant propagation and establishment; mechanization; pest, disease and weed control; irrigation; harvesting; storage and marketing systems. Many examples are provided throughout the book, and references are given to enable the reader to follow up particular interests in greater depth.
