Description

This book provides introduction to the work of Roland Barthes, one of the 20th century's most important literary and cultural theorists. New in the "Key Contemporary Thinkers" series, it covers all aspects of Barthes' writings including his work on literary theory, mass communications, the theatre and politics. Moriarty argues that Barthes' writing must not be seen as an unchanging body of thought, and that we should study his ideas in the contexts within which they were formulated, debated and developed. Among the topics covered are Barthes' early semiology as applied to mass culture, his writings on theatre, the "high-structuralist" period and the "death of the author", and discourse analysis.

Table of Contents

  • Part 1 Sign and ideology: myths
  • writing and responsibility
  • Barthes on theatre. Part 2 The structuralist activity: literary structuralism I - the ethnography of tragedy
  • "a little scientific delirium" - Barthes as semiologist
  • literary structuralism II - narrative analysis. Part 3 Beyond the sign: the post-structural analysis of narrative
  • text and its pleasures. Part 4 Late Barthes: affirming the imaginary
  • the body
  • image and real.
