Based on a comprehensive examination of documents from US Department of State archives on Korea, this book summarizes and interprets the record of US relations with Korea during the crucial two decades following World War II. Macdonald presents a record fraught with errors, misunderstandings and short-sighted ambitions on both sides. Nonetheless, initial US ignorance of Korean problems, only partially offset by a desire to help, has gradually given way to increased understanding and support. The book deals with domestic and international politics, economics and cultural exchange, as well as military affairs in political-economical perspective.
