Many structural mechanics textbooks concentrate on a numerical methodology, and while this approach serves the needs of potential research engineers, it is far less relevant for future practising engineers, who are more likely to be concerned with the use and interpretation of numerical analyses, rather than the development of a particular methodology. This text is addressed to the latter group and aims to provide a broad introduction to linear elastic continuum mechanics and structural dynamics. Worked examples and problems for student solution are included throughout the text. The book is intended as a textbook for final-year undergraduates and first-year postgraduates of civil, mechanical and aeronautical engineering. Practising engineers whose undergraduate course did not include continuum mechanics and structural dynamics should also find the book a useful introduction to these topics.
