A comprehensive review of experimental work carried out during the past decade on the synthesis of fluoro-organic compounds by direct and catalysed fluorination with elemental fluorine, by electro-chemical fluorination and by the action of cobalt (III) fluoride. The use of these methods to fluorinate elemento-organic and heterocyclic compounds, steroids and sugars is discussed and examples are given of the practical application of various fluorine-containing (particularly polyfluorinated) substances.
