Description

Representing the state-of-the-art in the application of neural networks and general pattern recognition techniques to problems in human-computer interaction (HCI), this important new book contains contributions from leading researchers in the field. Starting with a brief introduction to neural networks and to HCI, a justification for applying neural and other pattern recognition techniques to HCI is provided. Major topics within the area are identified such as: the identification of patterns in user behaviour for user modelling, plan recognition, interface evaluation and the utilization of novel input mechanisms including speech, handwriting and posture, how, initially to represent the data and finally, models of cognition. Research that has taken place within each of these areas is discussed, and arguments for and against different lines of research is outlined.
