The explosion, worldwide, of new museums and art galleries has been one of the most striking features of the cultural landscape during the 1980s. In Japan it is estimated a new museum opens at least once a week. This sudden flowering of (museology) has thrown into sharp relief the proper role of the museum and art gallery.
