Description

The decision to establish a remote storage facility has precipices and pitfalls that library directors must successfully negotiate. Once the decision is made, however, the negotiation is not over: rather a new set of obstacles must be met and overcome. "The Great Divide: Challenges in Remote Storage" addresses the issues involved in the establishment, relocation and maintenance of remote storage facilities. The result of a preconference sponsored by the Library Administration and Management Association is a compilation of six librarians' experiences in and opinions on establishing facilities. The writers offer practical information on all areas of consideration, from who in the university has the right of final decision when disagreement occurs, to the most effective methods and equipment for transporting materials to the new facility. The professional backgrounds of the contributors are equally diverse, including a preservation officer, an assistant director of financial planning and directors of public and academic libraries.
