Description and Table of Contents
Description
Sir Norman Foster, Principal of Foster Associates, is recognized as one of the world's leading architects. Royal Gold Medalist in 1983 and winner of the RIBA Trustees' Medal in 1990, he is soon to be invested with the gold Medal of the French Academy. In 1967 Norman and Wendy Foster established Foster Associates after several years of working with Richard Rogers. Perhaps best known internationally for the Hongkong Bank, Foster Associates have worked recently in Japan, France, Germany and Spain. The practice has received over 50 awards and commendations for outstanding architectural design, and has continued to hold a passionate belief in modern architecture and the adaptation of technology to meet human needs. Norman Foster has stated "...architecture is about people and the quality of life. I'm not suggesting that architecture can achieve that in isolation, but I feel that those are true generators - style and fashion have to be peripheral and secondary. It's not very fashionable to talk about technology, but I don't see how to can escape talking about it, because I don't see how you can escape making things - that's what technology and our culture are".
While the work presented in this volume covers an enormous range of diverse projects, there is a consistency of excellence which is difficult to match. An introduction by Architecture Correspondent for the Daily Telegraph, Kenneth Powell, and a selection of writings by Norman Foster are also featured. Completed buildings in this monograph include: Stansted Airport, London; ITN Headquarters, London; Century Tower, Tokyo; Sackler Galleries, Royal Academy of Arts, London and Telecommunications Tower, Barcelona. Also illustrated are a number of as yet unrealized projects including City of London Heliport, London; Shinagawa Higashi, Tokyo; masterplan, Duisburg, Germany: and La Bastide, Bordeaux.
