This is a detailed study of Tolstoy's "Soedinenie i Perevod Chetyrek Evangeli" (Union and Translation of the Four Gospels), a work he regarded as his finest and most important scholarly endeavour. One of the theses of this book is that Tolstoy's gospel did not lead to his religious views, but that his views gave rise to his gospels.
