Catullus (circa 84-54 BC) is one of the most attractive and approachable of Roman poets. His verses range from the bawdy and outrageous to the tender and passionate, from the deepest melancholy to wildest invective. Many of his phrases are catchwords today - "Odi et amo" (words writ on water). This edition is specifically designed for students studying Catullus for the first time. The Latin text is presented in a clear, uncluttered format and brief commentaries are provided to assist the student in interpreting and understanding the text. No poems are omitted or bowdlerized on the grounds of obscenity, in contrast to some earlier editions. Professor Garrison has supplemented the commentary with a list of Catullan characters, a guide to Catullan metres, a glossary of rhetorical terminology, a guide to Catullan usage, six maps and a lexicon of Catullan Latin. This book should be of interest to students and teachers of classical studies and Latin.
