This publication is concerned with humanities and social science provision in polytechnics and colleges. Over 100,000 students are enrolled on higher education courses in the humanities and social sciences, of whom some 40,000 are enrolled in polytechnics and colleges mainly on full-time first degree courses. Based on inspections carried out by HMI between 1986-1990, this review addresses such issues as the methods of teaching and learning, patterns of assessment and employment prospects for humanities and social science graduates.
