This work provides treatment of the basic aspects of thyroid hormone production, metabolism, mechanism of action, control and physiological effects. It covers and compares the key information in each of the vertebrate classes and provides practical advice on research, clinical practice or teaching. Featured are discussions of recent findings in nuclear thyroid hormone receptors and other possible mechanisms of action, and the nature of effects of thyroid hormones on metabolic rate and cellular metabolic function, and on development (growth and maturation) is explored. The book also adds insight into the types and patterns of enzymatic activation by hormone conversions in non-thyroid tissues, hormone degradation, inactivation and excretion.
