Drawing together the usually separate concerns of gender, class, race and ethnicity, this book explores the social construction of "difference" and the boundaries along these lines. It looks especially at the experiences of women, both Aboriginal and those from a non-English speaking background. It examines connections and conflicts between Aboriginal, migrant women and "white women" around issues of racism and feminism. Women are often invisible or marginal in writings about "race" and cultural difference, and Aboriginal women and migrant women are often invisible or marginal in women's studies. Where those women are made visible, it is usually as victims and problems, and in ways that reinforce culturalist explanations of their roles and social location. Likewise, Aboriginal studies, multicultural studies and race relations rarely acknowledge gender. This reflects the difficulties of representing multiple oppression, and expressing it theoretically. The book crosses a number of boundaries. First, it suggests a context for the experiences of Aboriginal and migrant women within social and political processes. Secondly, it acknowledges the significance of gender in race and ethnicity. Thirdly, it is written across a wide range of disciplines, drawing on debates, materials and concepts throughout feminist scholarship. "Jan Pettman is a Senior Research Fellow at the Peace Research Centre of the Australian National University. She has worked across race, gender and ethnicity divides here and in the UK and has written widely and worked with bureaucrats, educators, community workers and women's groups.". This book is intended for students and researchers in gender studies.
