内容説明
The discovery of the phenomenon of radioactivity some 100 years ago revolutionized the earth sciences. Early work established that the decay series of long-lived nuclides contain radioactive isotopes of several chemically and physically different elements. Only during the past three decades was it recognized that natural disruption of these decay chains, resulting in the separation of parent and daughter nuclides, occurs as a result of geochemical processes acting in the near-surface environment. The application of these naturally occurring radioactive disequilibria has since progressed rapidly and has diversified to touch upon a wide spectrum of geological, oceanographic, hydrological, palaeoclimatic, and archaeological problems. The second edition of this book reflects the rapid growth in the field during the past decade. As before, the book presents a comprehensive discussion of the theory and analytical methodology of uranium-series disequilibrium. The new edition emphasizes the diverse applications of uranium-series disequilibrium to problems in the Earth, marine, and environmental sciences, particularly with respect to developments that have occurred in the 1980s.
To this end, the editors have drawn upon the experience and expertise of leading practitioners in each specialized area. This book should thus serve both as a reference text and as a manual on the subject.
